English Mixed Trophy round three:
Lymm Mixed XI Vs
Carlisle Mixed XI
Round 4: 11th April 2010 vs Olton & West Warwick, Away 13:30 Start

After coming through against Sefton in the last round, Lymm knew they had a good chance against Carlisle. The team started the game well, and although a few players were not at 100 percent, it was Lymm who had the better of the early chances. On 12 minutes Lymm’s attacking pressure paid off- Lisa Hartley-Woodrow won a penalty corner coming in from left midfield and when the resultant shot was blocked on the line, Lymm were awarded a penalty flick. Captain Andy Hunt stepped up to score and Lymm had the lead.

Carlisle regrouped but it was Lymm who looked most likely to get the next goal, keeping possession well and playing some nice hockey, and the team were unlucky with a couple of penalty corner routines that didn’t quite come off. The all-important second goal arrived when Phill Griffiths spread the ball wide to Lisa. Her ball down the left channel was directed toward goal by Helen Weston. The keeper tried to smother the rebound but Susie Chiverton pounced to make it 2-0.

With a two-goal lead, Lymm dropped off the workrate and Carlisle enjoyed their best spell of the game. Mike Jones made an excellent save and Lymm’s defensive wall of Ross Arrowsmith, Alex Mitchell, Andy McGrath and Sarah Hunt had to work hard to maintain the team’s advantage. Ross got the side going again with a barn-storming run that took him from the centre of defence all the way to the top of Carlisle’s D and Lymm were able to go into halftime with an opportunity to take the game away from the opposition.

Despite Phill’s halftime words to keep the intensity up, it was Carlisle who scored next to make it 2-1. With both sides beginning to tire, a few tackles started flying in- Lisa was taken out on the byline but when the same player tried it against Phill later in the game, she ended up on the floor. Between them, Si Akrill and Phill began to wrestle the game away from Carlisle and create chances. A couple of times Andy Hunt was nearly sent clear of the defence only for a last ditch tackle or stick to stop him.

But Lymm’s good play was rewarded when a foul just outside the D saw Andy whip the ball across goal. Helen Weston tucked it just inside the post and despite the goalie getting a touch the ball dribbled over for the goal. With nothing to lose, Carlisle came forward looking to score but more good defensive work from Ross, Andy, Alex and Jo kept them out and Andy Hunt made the game safe with the goal of the game when an excellent clearance from deep was instinctively deflected toward the net. With the goalkeeper stranded off his line, the ball pinged in. Lymm made it 4-1 and now progress through to the last 16.

Thanks to all our supporters, and our umpire Phill Howard. Although there were a few candidates, Phill Griffiths was nominated as Div of the Day for a particularly spectacular self-inflicted nutmeg miss of the ball. Alex Mitchell was nommed as MVP for a typically outstanding defensive performance. Quarterfinals, ahoy!

Lymm Mixed XI Vs

Round 2: Liverpool Sefton Away 28th February 2010

Late drama, injuries, blood and not forgetting a win!

This game had it all; Lymm took the lead early in the game. Helen Weston received the ball from a short corner slip, who then pushed it to the opposite post than planned but Phill Griffiths was on hand to stop the ball and slap it into the goal, One - Nil. The game seemed to miss the midfield which was further encouraged by Ross Arrowsmith with some long passes. Lymm went two nil up with a fantastic passing move. Griffiths won the ball back in midfield, passed left to Hunt, who slipped the ball inside the defender back to Griffiths, who then passed the ball around the advancing goalie to Huddart, who finished comfortably. Injury number one: Nadeen hit on the hand by Ross but managed to play on, Then injury number two, Griffiths took one on the knee and went off, he is still on crutches! Injury number 3 Ross then had 3 or 4hits on the same foot; by the final one his only response was to throw his stick over the fence followed by some strong words. This was after Hunt had somehow managed to split the Keswick’s defenders head open injury number 4. Keswick had a lot of the play and possession in the second half and managed to score from a short corner to set up a tight finish. Keswick won a short corner on the final whistle, from the corner a glorious opportunity fell to the Keswick forward who just had Huddart on the line to beat, (not in a goalie kit) the forward could only find his knee, PENALTY! Pressure time. Mike Jones stood firm and saved the pen and Lymm went through to the next round.

Lymm Mixed XI vs Blackburn Mixed XI

With most members of the team hungover, we made the trip to Blackburn to face a side assembled by our summer ladies and mixed goal keeper, Ali.  The first half saw ‘horny udders’ (Lymms brand spanking new tour name) have a lot of possession and the better of the chances. Dave Phillips opened the scoring, after a bit of pinball in the oppositions D, he slotted the ball in from close range; doubling his season’s plus last season’s goal tally. The Second goal came when Andy Hunt ghosted around the last defender, and then slapped the ball high into the net past the advancing goalkeeper. Dave Phillips thought he had his second when he put the ball in from a tight angle, but it was disallowed for an earlier foot. Lisa Hartley and Andy Hunt could of have added to the goal tally but missed their one on one chances. Blackburn got back into the game scoring just before half time, 2:1 H/T

The second half saw Lymm fade, with the hangovers taking real shape. The game became more open with both teams lacking shape. This suited Blackburn, they evened things up after a good run down the right and into the D along the back line from where the ball was cut back for a shot, the shot was saved but our captain Phill S E Griffiths bungled the ball pasted past Tony Huddart in goal. Mr Griffiths was again at fault for their 3rd giving the ball away cheaply allowing their midfielder to drive into the D and slot the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal. This left Lymm behind for the first time in the game but with the game becoming more open we knew we would have a chance to equalise.  After Lymm pressure and a few short corners, one of which Jayne Buck hit well but was let down by her post man, we scored thanks to Lisa Hartley. Late on Lymm had a great chance to win the game. Some neat passing from Dave Antonelli and Lisa Hartley left Andy Hunt with a chance but the defender closed him down before he could get his shot away, 3-3 final score. Lymm should have put the game to bed at half time and were unlucky not to be three or four, one up at this point. Lymm paid for this in the second half with some sloppy play.

Round 1 Mixed Trophy: Liverpool Sefton away

Liverpool Sefton 15 v 2 Lymm

The Sefton team was made up of players from the higher reaches of North league so this was always going to be a tough game. Lymm started with 4 outfield men and 6 girlies in a typical Lymm 4-4-2 formation. After one-way traffic for the first 15mins we found ourselves 6-0 down with an embarrassing score line well within sight. This lead to Andy Hunt being forced to drop back to an unusual position of sweeper. Lymm finished the Half 10 goals behind! In the second half Lymm dealt with Sefton’s pressure much better and even found time to have some pressure of their own. After some good work from Lisa Hartley and Jayne Buck was left with a goal scoring opportunity which was well saved by the ‘keeper only to leave a tap-in for Ste Wong. Late on in the game Ross Arrowsmith was allowed time and space to get forward into the 'D', were he drilled the ball nicely into the bottom corner. Lymm lost the half 5-2 which was a good achievement.

Round 1 Mixed Plate: Barbarians home

P v P (Lymm Walkover)

A much awaited game (due to the many tussles between the teams in numerous summer tours) was postponed. Some people suggested they were scared. This left Lymm with a walkover to the 2nd round.

Round 2 Mixed: Burton Home

Lymm 3 v 3 Burton *Lymm lost 4-2 on penalties.

Burton were an unknown side from the Midlands Premier. After Lymm tried to drink all the ale in village on the Saturday night, we turned up at the pitch to see Burton already there, practising slick routines with two goal keepers, another 15-2 was on the cards!
Lymm started well and took the lead though Ross Arrowsmith and a bit of luck, an unfortunate Burton defender deflected a well-struck penalty corner into the goal. Lymm continued to have a lot of possession and were later rewarded when midfield Phill Griffiths made a strong run into the ‘D’ to square the pasted the advancing keeper, for Lisa Hartley to slot the ball into the empty goal. Lisa Harley and Andy Hunt both squandered decent chances to extend Lymms lead. Burton got back into the game scoring before half time, 2-1 to Lymm at the break.

Lymm continued to play well and created chances. Early in the half Dave Antonelli scored with a neat shot from the top of the ‘D’ after a good run.  Lymm started to relax with a 3-1 lead but probably too much, as Burton fought back to score 2 hard earned goals late on.  The score tied at 3-3 extra time was needed. Lymm looked weary as the late night started to catch up, but still found that last bit of energy see the game through without conceding a goal. At the other end Andy Hunt had a great chance to finish the game after beating the last defender found himself one on one with the keeper at a narrow angle, but he failed to lift the ball passed the keeper or see unmarked Phill Griffiths on the pen spot. Penalties it was.

Penalties were as follows;
Burton (scored)          Dave Antonelli             (scored)
Burton (scored)          Ross Arrowsmith
(missed)
Burton
(Missed)          Lisa Hartley                (scored)
Burton (scored)          Andy Hunt
(missed)
Burton (scored)          Phil Griffiths                (DNT)

Lymm played well in a game, which was competitive.  Overall Lymm created the better chances and are unlucky not to go through to the last 32.
